Team mode at a glance

Truxton Extreme marks the first time the Truxton series offers simultaneous two-player shoot ‘em up action on home platforms. Team mode is local split-screen or shared-screen co-op depending on platform implementation — check your version’s display layout in Options. Two pilots fly separate Javelion fighters against Geranium forces while pooling resources and score.

Official materials emphasize cooperation: lives and bombs are shared, the on-screen score reflects both players combined, and a downed partner can be revived if the surviving player holds bombs and physically touches the defeated ship. There is no online matchmaking in the base game; couch co-op is the intended experience, with Steam Remote Play Together as a PC workaround for remote friends.

Getting started

Connect a second controller before entering Team mode from the main menu. Player one typically selects Story-related routes or arcade-style progression depending on which sub-mode Team supports in your build — confirm on the Team tile description at launch. Both players should run through the Tutorial individually first so HUD colors and pickup drift behavior are familiar.

Agree on house rules before starting: Who spends bombs during boss phases? Will you chase weapon colors together or split colors for coverage? Communication prevents the classic co-op failure mode where both players grab the same pickup and leave gaps uncovered.

Shared lives and continue pressure

Unlike some modern co-op shooters that grant independent life pools, Team mode ties you together. When the shared life counter hits zero, both players fail unless continue rules allow extra credits. This design rewards protective play — the stronger player cannot ignore a struggling partner because drain on lives affects everyone.

Options that increase starting lives still apply, but remember inflated life counts may disable ranked submissions. For casual family sessions, extra lives are worthwhile. For score validation, accept default limits and play conservatively.

Bomb rescue mechanic

The rescue touch is Team mode’s signature cooperative twist. If one ship is destroyed and the partner still carries a bomb stock, moving into contact can trigger a revival play. Exact timing and invulnerability frames should be verified in-game, but the intent is clear: bombs are not only screen clears — they are teammate insurance.

Do not hoard bombs selfishly. A unused bomb cannot revive anyone. Conversely, burning every bomb for score clears leaves no safety net when one player misreads a bullet pattern. Our boss guide notes that boss phases are prime rescue moments because bullet density spikes.

Shared scoring

Team mode displays a combined score. EX chains, item pickups, and stage-end bonuses accrue to the same total. Competitive duos should plan EX activation so both players benefit — for example, one player triggers EX while the other herds enemies into the boosted stream.

Read scoring strategy for Arena techniques that still apply when you want to push co-op leaderboards. Remember ranked play may require default life and bomb settings.

Weapon and pickup coordination

Weapon colors behave the same as solo play. Three power icons level a shot type. Because pickups drift horizontally, partners can intentionally flank to steer icons toward the player who wants a specific color. Thunder Laser and homing variants excel when one player handles side spawns while the other focuses forward pressure.

Speed boosts and manual velocity controls remain per ship. If one player prefers slow precision and the other aggressive grazing, that asymmetry is fine — just avoid crossing streams in ways that block pickups.

Stage routing for two ships

Vertical shmups get crowded with two hitboxes. Assign vertical lanes when possible: left player owns the left third, right player owns the right third, and you meet at center only for boss weak points. During bullet-heavy patterns, drift apart to reduce overlapping collision boxes.

Heart Starter rules may differ in Team — confirm whether both players receive forgivable damage or only in specific sub-modes. For learning, consider solo Heart Starter first via how to play, then graduate to Team on Story stages you already recognize.

Platform notes

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Steam, and GOG releases all list local co-op in official fact sheets. Switch 2 handheld mode may shrink readable bullet fields — use Tabletop mode or docked play for fairness. PC players need two controllers mapped; see gamepad bindings for typical layouts.

Thunder Master physical editions include the full game cart or case code; co-op requires no separate unlock. Editions comparison covers regional packaging only, not gameplay differences.

Co-op versus solo progression

Story episode unlocks may still advance while playing Team, but verify save behavior per character route in your version. If only the host progresses manga unlocks, rotate who hosts each session for fairness.

Arcade Team runs are excellent skill checks because checkpoints remain sparse. Use co-op to teach a friend before they solo Arcade unlock path.

Common mistakes

Chasing the same EX item and colliding. Burning both bombs simultaneously on trivial waves and entering bosses empty. Stacking both ships on a single pickup line and missing color upgrades entirely. Talking over pattern callouts — assign one person to announce boss phase shifts.

After your first clear

Once Team mode feels comfortable, challenge yourselves with default life limits and no option inflation. Try Arena separately for two-minute solo skill, then return to Team for full-stage synergy. Narrative context for why two TATSUJIN fly together sits in story characters and the broader story hub.
